here is what he says in the debate, which is the real romney? >> do you think moderators should play that role? i don't want to knock jim lehrer, he's a distinguished journalist, but i have seen people like the late tim russert and people like bob schieffer, whenever they hear a complete nonsense statement from a politician on the sunday shows, they tend to go, now, just a minute. are you saying -- you can't believe that. that sort of general, ron, skepticism. you first, michelle. isn't it in order to say -- when a guy is flipping for an hour and a half, to stop him and say that's not been your position, sir? >> i understand the argument that he wants to be a kind of neutral arbiter, but, yes, absolutely. when you say, you know, flat out there is no tax cut for the wealthy in my plan or he says that kind of higher income people aren't going to pay any smaller of a share of the tax burden, when he's been saying on camera for more than a year now that he intends to reduce their rates to 20%, that he intends to reduce the inheritance tax, reduce ca

there's problems with theway romney went through that debate. looked good but didn't exactly convey a lot of truth. your thoughts? >> that's exactly what democrats are saying. paul ryan was out today and says that he expects for the next month he's going to hear from the obama campaign that they are liars and you hear liberals picking up on that. again, to go to this point about "saturday night live," i think it underscores what people already saw from that debate, which is that president obama turned in a very poor performance. i thought that he would have been smart to go on to "saturday night live" and sort of lampoon himself. we saw him do that out west. i guess the "saturday night live" folks reached out to him and they both declined. i think it has been a right of passage in elections, going back to 2008 when mccain was on, obama was on, hillary clinton was on and sarah palin, too. it is part of our political discourse. it reinforces the narratives. i think "snl" has had problems portraying obama. they sbich switched to a new guy. jay ferr

he's willing to say anything, romney, anything in a debate. how do you beat a guy who is willing to say anything, who knows it only matters when the camera is off. when he sends out a staffer to correct the record. nobody is watching. that's what he likes. >> i don't disagree with you about the auto industry as an issue. i don't disagree with you about women's rights as an issue and equal pay, about you you can't walk away from the medicare issue and you can't let romney say that he's the guy who is going to protect medicare when he's, in fact, going to turn it into voucher care. senior citizens, especially in states like florida, pennsylvania, you know this, ohio, are going to be a big part of this electorate. they want to understand what's happening there. because the president didn't respond on medicare in the debate with any force, his advantage -- >> but you can't -- >> his advantage among seniors on the issue of medicare has shrunk. he's got to get that back, argue the issues you're arguing, but it's all got to be in a big context which

in wednesday's debate you saw romney pushing moderator jim lehrer around pretty much at will. eventually president obama joined in. but here is a flashback of the romney/lehrer face-off from jimmy fallon. >> it's my priority to repeal obama -- >> okay, now, governor romney you are well over the two minute allotted -- >> jim, i still have 30 seconds here on -- >> if -- >> jim, jim -- just politely going to hush you up a bit. >> going to keep you. >> na, na, na. >> respect the governor -- >> jim, do us all a favor and just -- i think it's a little weird that you're here still. you can just leave and do whatever you want. >> no, i'm the moderator here. >> jim -- >> hold on now. i'm going to have to ask you to step down, okay? ja, ja, ja. >> that's just a noise. >> jim, jim, jim, would you shut the [ bleep ] up. >> that was a facsimile i think. more from the debate aftermath. the big bird nonsense continues. how did the former gop candidates feel about the mitt romney pledge to stop funding for pbs if elected president? first, rick santorum last night on cnn. >> would you kill big

i think romney's very good in these debate settings carrying out prescripted attacks. sticking to the script, he can be very effective. >> who can't? you're reading somebody else's script. who can't be? >> there's a common trait among people who have run against mitt romney, democrat and republican. >> they don't like him. >> they don't like him. mccain, by all indications, obama. >> that's why mccain picked hallen, he couldn't stand romney. >> if romney is good at carrying out these attacks, and obama brilss at his criticism, is it easy for romney to get under his skin? obama said to hillary clinton, you're likeable enough, hillary. >> was that smugness or -- he did it spontaneously. i agree, it was terrible. >> can romney knock him off his game by getting under his skin. >> what would drive obama crazy? >> these broad stroke indictments of the last four years -- >> bob, it's something truly serious tonight, it could get ugly. we're hearing all this stuff leaking from the romney camp how he's going to hit him on dishonesty. i don't know how somebody stands on a platfo

romney's team has concluded that the debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers he's memorized and has been practicing on aides since august. bob shrum, you have been on that particular role, preparing candidates for debate. what do you make of romney, a rather stiff customer to begin with, coming off as sort of a henny youngman or whatever, some sort of a don rickles with some zingers. i don't think of him as a zinger kind of guy where obama is expected to be left helpless. what do you make of that strategy? >> first of all, if you had it, you wouldn't announce it. it's kind of stupid. >> why are they leaking it? >> i don't know. because they're trying to hold onto their people, they're undisciplined, i have no idea. number two, zingers don't exist in a vacuum. it's not just coming up with some funny lines. they have to be part of the fabric of the argument and part of the fabric of who the person is. when ronald reagan said, there you go again, it was completely natural to him. as you know, chris, carter was right, he had opposed medicare at the star
